Australian Border Force Commissioner visits FRCS
23rd January, 2019
The Commissioner of the Australian Border Force, Mr. Michael Outram, met the Fiji Revenue and Customs Chief Executive Officer Mr. Visvanath Das at the Revenue and Customs complex this afternoon.
Mr. Outram’s visit follows the visit by the Australian Prime Minister, Honorable Scott Morrison last week where he announced the new border security assistance package to Fiji.
“Australia has committed to deliver a comprehensive border security assistance package to help reinforce the integrity of Fiji’s borders. These initiatives will build on long-established partnerships between our border security agencies, and will contribute to strengthening border management and security across the region,” Mr. Das said.
Mr. Das also thanked the Australian government and the Australia Border Force for the support towards FRCS in the form of customs modernization, technical assistance and capacity building that has helped FRCS improve its core roles – border protection, security, trade facilitation, revenue and compliance.
Mr. Outram who was accompanied to Fiji by the Heads of Australian National Security for Defence and Federal Police was accorded a traditional i-sevusevu by staff of Revenue and Customs.
Mr. Outram said that Australian Border Force is committed towards assisting Fiji to keep its borders safe. “We need to work towards practical solutions to step up border security in the region. It is rather unfortunate that crime syndicates continue to target our borders through drug peddling and smuggling,” he added.
