Fiji Islands Revenue and Customs Authority (FIRCA) is committed to streamlining the organisation structure with a view to improve operational efficiency and effectiveness. The Board has decided last year to reduce the number of Divisions to three, (previously 7), each headed by a General Manager. Two of the National Manager positions in the Inland Revenue Division have been combined into one, resulting in one being made superfluous.

 

Sea Port Charges

Fiji Islands Revenue and Customs Authority (FIRCA) clarifies that there is no threat to revenue collected by the Fiji Ports Corporation as a result of the export duty levied on bottled water. All exports through sea ports are subject to sea port charges, according to the tariff that Fiji Ports has in place. This tariff is set for different specifications of goods and all exporters are required to pay port charges applicable to them.

 

Reveue Collection for July 2008

The Fiji Islands Revenue and Customs Authority (FIRCA) continued with its strong performance in revenue collection for the month of July. “Tax revenue collection for the month of July exceeded its forecast by $6.8m” said Mr. Jitoko Tikolevu, the Chief Executive Officer of the Authority.

Consistent with the 2009 Budget announcement, the Fiji Islands Revenue & Customs Authority (FIRCA) wishes to advise the general public that effective from 1 January 2009, all the financial institutions will be required to deduct 31% tax on interest earned notwithstanding the supply of tax identification number (TIN) to the financial institutions.

 

Resident Interest Withholding Tax

Performance Bonus

The FIRCA Board decided at its Special Meeting on Monday January 7, 2008 to pay bonus to all non-contracted staff in lieu of 2007 performance. The decision was made in consideration of the revenue performance for the year, which resulted in a growth of about 2.9% from the 2006 results. The revenue collected also exceeded the revised revenue forecast for the year by about 1.9%.

 

Peceli Vocea Appointment

The Interim Minister for Finance, National Planning, Sugar Industry & Public Utilities Mahendra Chaudhry has appointed Peceli Vocea, Permanent Secretary for Finance, National Planning & Sugar Industry, as the new Chairman of the Fiji Islands Revenue & Customs Authority (FIRCA) Board of Directors in accordance with Section 5 (1) of the FIRCA Act 1998, effective
from 18th February, 2008.

 

Meeting Between Finance, FIRCA and Bottled Water Companies

The Minister for Finance, National Planning, Sugar Industry and Public Utilities, Mr. Mahendra Pal Chaudhry convened a meeting at 11.30am this morning with the Mineral Water companies and the Fiji Island Revenue & Customs Authority  (FIRCA) to hear the industry’s concerns on the recently announced policy by Government to impose a new excise duty and export duty of 20 cents per litre effective from 1 July 2008.

 

Joint Meeting – Finance and Bus Operators

The Minister for Finance, National Planning, Sugar Industry and Public Utilities, Mr Mahendra Pal Chaudhry convened a meeting at 11am this morning with government officials (FIRCA, LTA and Ministry of Transport) and representatives of the Fiji Bus Operators Association to prepare an assistance package for the bus industry given the escalating fuel prices.
